The Lord Mayor’s plans for the Shorncliffe Pier, which call for a total removal and rebuild of the Pier due to the substructure’s bad state, should be carefully examined by locals.
The Pier’s support structures were discovered to be in need of total replacement when the conservation
assessment was conducted last year.
To be clear for the community, the Lord Mayor’s plans call for demolishing the current pier and using its components-like the decking-as furniture for the new building.
The new Pier was to have the same appearance and feel as the current one, but there are several
alterations that people need to be aware of.
To extend the life of the Pier, for instance, the pylons will be constructed of concrete rather than wood.
As soon as the tenders are closed, work is expected to start in the middle of 2014. If there are no delays brought on by bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, it should take around a year.
On Saturday, September 14, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, and on Wednesday, September 18, from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, council members from the Shorncliffe Pier project team will be at the Sandgate Library to address enquiries on the detailed design.
