The Queensland neighbourhood of Sandgate was formerly known as Cabbage Tree Creek. The area was referred to by the Aboriginals as Warra. which is Aboriginal for “a stretch or expanse of water.”
Sandgate’s first land opening led to the development of a small town in 1853. When the railway line was finished in 1882, it made it possible to reach Brisbane in less than 30 minutes, which sped up regional development. The Queensland Governor proclaimed Sandgate a town in 1880.
The town hall and the Baptist church at Cliff Street and Flinders Pde are two significant historical sites in Sandgate. The Baptist Church was founded in the late 19th century and has undergone numerous renovations while maintaining its original design. With its spotless beaches, Sandgate was a very popular weekend getaway for folks travelling from Brisbane to escape the heat.
